A Tale of Two Trips: Paddling the Broken Skull River. The Assabet River to the Sea.

  • White Rose Canoe 291 High Road Newbury, MA, 01951 United States (map)

For February we had an offer that we just couldn’t refuse - the opportunity to hear about two very different, but great trips by two experienced local paddlers.

Paddling the Broken Skull; The Broken Skull starts as a small, alpine river in Canada’s Mackenzie mountains near the border of the Northwest Territories and Yukon and grows into that has recently (the last 10 years) become a well known destination for wilderness paddlers. Bob Latshaw and five friends paddled the Broken Skull this past summer and shared a more adventurous trip than planned. Bob will be here to share his experience and the lessons learned that kept them out of a potential disaster.

Not everyone can take three weeks of off work and commit major resources for a paddle trip...this second trip is a good example of how you can plan and execute a multi-day experience in our own backyard.

Assabet to the Sea: This trip started in Maynard, MA on the Assabet River, traverses the Assabet and the Concord Rivers to reach the Merrimack, then travels down to the Atlantic. The trip includes urban portaging, navigating traffic as well as the river, and timing the tides even when you’re 22 miles from the salt water. Ozzy, who has a personal goal of paddling “Source to Sea” on all of the major waterways in New England, will talk us through his recent run down this route.

With two talks, we’re planning at least an extra 30 minutes and won’t be surprised if we run long. Set aside the time - it will be worth it.
